The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the study of phonetics with emphasis on articulatory phonetics. It is also aimed at enabling students to recognize and produce speech sounds correctly. A distinction between phonetics and phonology will be made. This distinction is important since these are two different bur related fields. It is also aimed at helping students to recognize and use prosodic features. These features help in helping students to discover how language production is dynamic beyond the word level and also bring to fore an understanding of how meaning is achieved by use of stress, tone and intonation. Broad and narrow transcriptions are different levels where broad does not give detailed information but narrow transcription gives detailed information and hence making it clear how language users produce language in specific contexts. Discovering phonemes and their variants is also given emphasis in this course.
